What is red raspberry leaf tea

Red raspberry leaf tea is an herbal infusion brewed from the pale green leaves of the raspberry plant. The caffeine-free drink is rich in vitamins and minerals attributing to its therapeutic properties.

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

History and origin

In the past, it was used as folk remedy for promoting uterine health, resolving fertility problems, reducing morning sickness in pregnant women, and treating leg cramps, diarrhea, gingivitis, canker and cold sores. The health benefits of the red raspberry leaf were documented in a book called “The Herbal” in 1957.

Effects of red raspberry leaf tea on pregnancy and labor

It contains fragrine, an alkaloid that aids in strengthening the uterus and pelvic muscles, helping pregnant women by easing labor pain at the time of delivery. Although there is no relevant evidence suggesting the effectiveness of the leaf tea in inducing labor, it has been found to help expectant mothers have a smooth delivery by speeding up labor, thereby reducing the possibility of using birth interventions such as artificial rupture of membranes, cesarean section, or vacuum or forceps-assisted delivery. It could also curb the risk of a premature birth or late delivery.

Since it takes some time for the herbal infusion to show the useful effects, make sure you start having it when you are about 32-33 weeks pregnant in limited amounts. After consulting a doctor, you may begin with 1 cup of the tea and slowly increase to 3 cups a day.

NOTE: The use of red raspberry leaf tea during early pregnancy (first trimester) is not recommended by physicians due to its ability to cause uterine contractions, increasing the risk of miscarriage.

If you are overdue, then avoid having the herbal drink in excess as it might cause contractions in the uterus, resulting in fetal distress.

Avoid its use if you are expecting a breech baby or twins, experiencing vaginal bleeding in the later stages of pregnancy, having a history of endometriosis, fibroids, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, premature labor, or cesarean section, or suffering from any complications such as high blood pressure.

Is red raspberry leaf tea safe

Side effects

It is possibly safe for drinking with no adverse side effects even though in some cases nausea, loose stools, and allergy may occur due to overconsumption.

While the astringent properties coming from the presence of tannins have been claimed to be useful for the uterus affected with endometriosis and fibroids, the estrogen-like behavior of red raspberry leaf is believed to worsen the symptoms of certain estrogen-dependant conditions, including ovarian cancer and breast cancer. Therefore, in such cases, it is important to have a discussion with a doctor prior to its use.

For breastfeeding

The caffeine-free tea might help in enhancing lactation during the postpartum period. However, nursing mothers should consult a physician before its intake as there is no strong evidence to support its safety while breastfeeding.
